Welcome back, Insiders!
You know how after watching one video of crazy cats, it can feel like your entire feed has been taken over by crazy cats? I know it’s just an algorithm, algorithm-ing but it can seem like the entire world is suddenly crazy about cats. As the curator of the alwaysAI Insider, I sometimes wonder if my brain’s algorithm is skewed too far toward AI is everything.
This week my reality check came from news out of Davos. The World Economic Forum’s gathering of business leaders, billionaires, heads of state, royalty, academics, journalists, and celebrities proved it’s not just those of us in the tech biz incessantly talking about AI. AI has reached the zeitgeist.
Some of the notable AI directives:
👫 We need continued global cooperation in establishing rules and regulations regarding AI governance.
✅ With upcoming US elections, understanding how AI contributes and can accelerate disinformation is critical. Here’s how OpenAI is working to prevent abuse.
🔋 As the need for training data grows, the future of AI depends on finding new sources of energy.
🤖 In the near term, as Hadi Partovi, Founder and CEO, Code.org noted, fear of losing your job to AI should be replaced by a fear of losing your job to another human who knows how to use AI.
Beyond Davos, headlines continue to suggest that when it comes to AI, more is more.
📱 Samsung debuted its new “AI phone.” It includes AI features like “circle to search” (circle anything on your screen to learn more about it and photo altering (cool and…potentially dangerous?).
🚗 Volkswagen is adding ChatGPT to cars. Who hasn’t wanted more enriching conversations with their dashboard? More is more!
🏪 OpenAI’s GPT Store is open. Users can now create a custom GPT for specific, targeted information on a certain subject. For example, hiking guides from AllTrails, design tools from Canva, or Khan Academy’s Code Tutor. I’m thinking something titled, “What would mom say” where I feed my GPT all my sage advice. My kids would love it! More is more!
🤔 Will.i.am is launching the first-ever podcast with an AI cohost, qd.pi. I’m intrigued.
But even as the potential for AI lurches higher, the number of questions about AI's practicality grows too. (One Davos panel was specifically focused on bridging the gap between AI's potential and its practical application.)
For many enterprises, more AI may not be the answer. Taking a more discerning approach will yield better results, faster. What type of AI can practically solve your most pressing problems?
It’s hard to resist the lure of more is more with AI, but managing expectations is more important than ever. That's why we stress computer vision as practical AI. For industries that need real-time, visual data, the payoff is clear. Vision AI provides more “eyes” on whatever part of your business needs illuminating. The impact is immediate and direct. Once you see where there are inefficiencies in your operations, you can take action to eliminate them.
Below you can read about how to help navigate the expectations vs. reality of AI and overcome AI-washing while vetting vendors, some new ways retailers are using computer vision, how AI is coming to the physical world, and why alwaysAI has unbeatable tech.
We know it's not easy to navigate the promise and reality of AI and we appreciate you trusting us to help you do so. When it comes to building our alwaysAI community, more actually is more.
