I recently celebrated my 32nd birthday in true cowgirl fashion — on a horse ranch, channeling my inner Wrangler 🤠. I spent the day with a friendly chap named Ernesto who showed me the ropes, both literally and figuratively. 

As we rode the trails and wrangled the practice steer (to clarify, I was perfecting my lasso technique before facing a real bull's judgmental stare), Ernesto asked about my work. I explained how I help enterprises grasp the power of computer vision. To make it relatable, I shared an example tailored to his love for horses. Imagine, I said, using computer vision to monitor your horses in their stalls 24/7. If a horse shows signs of colic by rolling around, the system would alert you for immediate medical attention. Ernesto's eyes widened, and his jaw dropped. He got it instantly and started brainstorming all sorts of applications.

This got me thinking... why are so many businesses struggling to see the long-term benefits of AI when the practical benefits of computer vision are so clear?

It doesn't help when the market is flooded with frivolous AI applications, like resurrecting deceased actors' voices for audiobooks or, my personal favorite, creating dating scenarios reminiscent of the movie 'Her'. I can already see the headline now: "Man Marries AI Chatbot!" 🥴 These attention-grabbing applications can blind us to the practical and impactful uses of AI that are out there, like computer vision.

Instead of seeing the real advancements, we’re often met with headlines like Goldman Sachs’ gloomy 'Gen AI: Too Much Spend, Too Little Benefit?'

AI is definitely the hot topic, but its practical benefits often remain shrouded in mystery. It's a buzzword everyone's buzzing about without truly grasping its potential.

Take computer vision, for example. It illuminates reality, enabling businesses to take real-time action and achieve more without massive resource requirements or time.

Computer vision is already making a significant impact across various industries today, from mining and manufacturing to retail. Whether it’s detecting PPE gear to ensure worker safety, spotting anomalies on production lines, or, Ernesto’s personal favorite, alerting when a horse in its stall might need medical attention, the immediate benefits of computer vision are undeniable. We just need to spread the word so more businesses can take advantage of it.
